In this insightful narrative, we delve into the intriguing connection between Hindus and the events of Muharram and Karbala. Citing works by prominent scholars such as Yogunder Sikand in The Milli Gazette and Rakesh Sharma in other articles, we explore the research of renowned historian Sesar Kumar Mitra, who, in his book “The Vision of India,” uncovers a historical trade relationship between India and Arab countries even before the emergence of Islam. Numerous Hindu merchants resided in Arabia and exchanged goods between the two regions.
Even after the advent of Prophet Muhammad and the revelation of the Quran, many Hindus actively participated in gatherings to listen to his divine message, forging a profound connection with the Prophet’s family. The heartrending episode of Karbala in 680 AD witnessed the bold inclusion of a Hindu businessman, Rahab Dutt, and his seven sons, who joined Imam Hussain’s army to confront the Yazidi forces. According to legend, Rahab Dutt’s gesture was an expression of gratitude for Imam Hussain’s prayers, which eventually blessed him with seven sons.
Imam Hussain, acknowledging Rahab Dutt’s courage and devotion, bestowed the title of Sultan upon him. Historian Sukumar Mitra further reveals that before the rise of the Prophet, Hindus, particularly Brahmins, inhabited Arabia, practising their faith and worshipping deities like Shiva and Makresha, believed to be an early name for Mecca.
