Nana Patekar and Army Unite for Education in Kashmir

As peace returns to Kashmir after the removal of Article 370, Bollywood actor Nana Patekar has taken on a unique role. While many filmmakers rush to shoot in the picturesque valley, Patekar has partnered with the Indian Army to improve education for children living near the Line of Control (LOC).

This initiative, though still in its early stages, shows great promise. Ganesh Thorat, who manages the project for Patekar’s NGO NAAM, believes strongly in education’s power. He says, “Education is the only weapon through which every evil can be controlled.”

NAAM’s Journey from Farm Relief to Education

NAAM, founded in 2015 by Nana Patekar and Marathi actor Makarand Anaspure, initially focused on helping farmers in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha and Bheed districts. These areas had seen many farmer suicides. Over time, NAAM has expanded its work to other fields, including education.

Now, as Kashmir enters a new era of development, NAAM sees an opportunity to help. They’re working with the Army to rebuild and improve schools in remote areas near the LOC in north Kashmir. Ganesh Thorat and Malhar Patekar (Nana’s son and a known Marathi actor) manage NAAM’s operations.

A Comprehensive Plan for Kashmir’s Schools

NAAM’s approach to improving education in Kashmir is well-thought-out. Thorat explains, “Based on our research, we made a comprehensive plan which will be implemented in a phased manner.” The organisation aims to create a better learning environment for children, believing this will guide them towards a brighter future.

To make this plan a reality, NAAM is looking beyond its resources. They plan to involve companies and use their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. This money will help rebuild school infrastructure and promote education across Kashmir.

By combining Nana Patekar’s star power, NAAM’s experience in social work, and the Army’s reach in remote areas, this initiative hopes to bring positive change to Kashmir’s educational landscape. It’s a unique example of how different sectors of society can work together to support children’s futures in challenging environments.
