Record-Breaking Kashmiri Folk Dance Marks 78th Independence Day Celebration

In a spectacular display of cultural pride, 10,000 young women set a new world record by performing the largest-ever Kashmiri folk dance at the Kashur Riwaaj Cultural Fest. This mega event, organized by the Dagger Division of Chinar Corps, Baramulla District Administration, and Indrani Balan Foundation, was held at Prof. Showkat Ali Indoor Stadium as part of the 78th Independence Day celebrations.

The festival’s highlight was the collective performance of the ‘Rouf’ dance by the young women. One participant shared, “We practised for almost a month. It was worth it. We’re proud to be part of this world record.” The Universal Records Forum, an ISO 9001:2015 certified organisation, judged the record-breaking event.

Cultural Showcase and Notable Performances

The fest showcased Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage through traditional dances, music, calligraphy, and other activities. Talented local artists gave remarkable performances, including 13-year-old Ishfaq Hamid Bhat, who played the ‘Rubab’ beautifully. Ishfaq, winner of the Pradhan Mantri Bal Puraskar 2024, is known for preserving Kashmiri musical traditions.

Naseer Ahmed Mir, a famous Santoor player who received a gold medal from the President in 2021, also performed at the event. The Rubab and Santoor mini concert captivated the audience. Shafi Mir, a calligraphy expert from Baramulla, added to the cultural richness of the fest.

Collaboration and Impact

The event was a joint effort of the army, district authorities, and the Indrani Balan Foundation. Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Major General Rajesh Sethi, and Brigadier Rajat Bhatt attended the historic event. Minga Sherpa, Deputy Commissioner, led the team that ensured the smooth running of the fest.

An official from IBF said, “This shows great teamwork between the government, army, businesses, and young people.” A local professor noted that the event helped revive interest in Kashmiri traditions among youth. The cultural fest not only set a world record but also celebrated Kashmir’s artistic talent and rich heritage, bringing together different parts of society in a colourful and meaningful way.
