Timeless Craft of Abdul Aziz Gujri and Kashmiri Wood Carving

Abdul Aziz Gujri started his journey in wood carving when he was just 12 years old.

In the beautiful land of Kashmir, where the tall Himalayas touch the sky and green valleys spread wide, lives Abdul Aziz Gujri. The wood workshop where he works features the natural scent of wood while he employs his skills at age 73. Abdul Aziz Gujri has spent over sixty years perfecting the art of Khatamband, which is the traditional wood carving of Kashmir. The traditional art stands at risk of extinction because society loses its connection to cultural heritage while mass production continues. The years of working with wood have developed such excellent craftsmanship skills in Gujri that he folds wood into magnificent flowers together with geometric patterns. Through his mission he dedicates himself to saving this historic art practice for upcoming generations because each wood piece shares hidden stories according to his belief.

A Lifelong Journey in Craftsmanship

Abdul Aziz Gujri started his journey in wood carving when he was just 12 years old. During his training in Srinagar as summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir he learned wood carving from an expert instructor. His combination of basic tools allows Gujri to modify walnut wood into sculptures that present the deep Kashmiri cultural heritage. The walnut trees have supplied strong and magnificent wood for carving since the 15th century. Gujri integrates Persian design elements along with Kashmiri motifs such as chinar leaf and almond blossom that hold symbolic significance to his native land.

The Art of Storytelling Through Wood

Every piece that Abdul Aziz Gujri produces serves as more than an ornament because it expresses historical significance. The process of making some pieces took him two years as he believes each wood curve contains prayers. The essence within Gujri’s artwork makes it vary from industrial production because it comes from the heart.

Challenges in a Changing World

Gujri faces many obstacles to maintain his art form even after he received the State Award for Art and Craft in 2018. The primary challenge facing his arts practise stems from economic market forces. Fabricating products through hand carving represents a lengthy and demanding process that drives up their prices. Products produced from machines continue to stay more appealing to consumers due to lower pricing. The main hurdle faced by Gujri stems from a scarcity of young apprentices working in his craft. Kashmiri youth primarily select technology-related fields over mastering traditional crafts making practices. Like many artisan families in the current era Abdul Aziz Gujri’s children have chosen professional routes for their careers. The environmental protection rules about walnut tree cutting created an obstacle for artisans to access suitable timber materials. The struggles facing his craft do not dissuade Gujri from continuing his woodworking practises. Through cooperatives and exhibitions Gujri sells his work while keeping profits at a minimum level.

Cultural Significance and Global Relevance

Kashmiri wood carving is not just about making beautiful objects; it is a vital part of the region’s history. Exclusive shrine ceilings from ancient times reveal Kashmiri artisans did their work with supreme skill and artistic imagination. Through his wood carvings Gujri links his artwork to the deep literary heritage of Kashmir by referencing the well-known work of Lalla-Ded. As a result of increasing global trends people worldwide have become interested in responsible artwork creation and sustainable craftsmanship. The Craft Council of India together with UNESCO work to preserve his techniques by adding documentation to revive old apprentice training systems.
