Makai Park: From Grilled Corn to BBQ Hotspot

Dal Lake in Kashmir is famous for its beautiful views and special attractions. Tourists love to ride in shikaras (small boats) and stay in houseboats on the lake. Near Dal Lake, there’s a small but popular place called Makai Park, also known as Makai Point. This article will throw some light on   the history of Makai Park, its tasty barbecues, and why it’s so special to both locals and tourists. 

The Story of Makai Park 

Makai Park is in an area called Karpora. It got its name “Makai” (which means corn in Hindi) because it started as a place where people used to sell grilled corn. Mohd Younis Kissu, who works at Makai Park, says the place is very old and has changed slowly over time. In the beginning, only grilled corn was sold here. But as years passed, more shop owners started selling barbecues. Even though barbecues are now the main attraction, you can still find two shops selling grilled corn, keeping a bit of the old tradition alive. 

Today, Makai Park has about 15 to 20 small shops or stalls. Most of these sell different types of barbecues, which have become the area’s specialty. The market has grown popular over the years, attracting both locals and tourists who come to enjoy the tasty food and the lively atmosphere near the beautiful Dal Lake. 

Barbecues: The Star of Makai Park 

In Kashmiri, barbecues are called “tujj’e”. At first, the shops in Makai Park only sold mutton barbecues. But now, to make everyone happy, they offer many options. You can find chicken, fish, and beef barbecues along with the traditional mutton ones.

For vegetarian visitors, there are also many choices. The shops sell barbecues made from paneer (Indian cottage cheese), mushrooms, and soya chaap. This variety ensures that there’s something for everyone, whether they eat meat or prefer vegetarian food. 

The prices of barbecues depend on what they’re made of. Mutton barbecues are usually the most expensive at around 110 rupees per piece. Chicken, fish, and vegetarian options are typically priced at about 70 rupees per piece. 

The Art of Kashmiri Barbecue 

What makes Kashmiri barbecue special is the way it is cooked. The meat or vegetables are grilled slowly over hot coal. This slow cooking method makes the food taste better and gives it a unique smoky flavour that people love. The use of Kashmiri spices adds to the special taste of these barbecues.

The Flavors of Kashmiri food have been influenced by Mughal and Arabian cooking styles, which can be seen in the way barbecues are prepared and enjoyed here. This mix of cultural influences has resulted in unique Flavors that attract food lovers from all over India and the world.
