Aabid Jafri: In Every Tear, a Verse

The legacy that Aabid left behind is besides literature; it is a love story, a story of humanity, and a whole lot of belief in people's positive ways.

Aabid Jafri’s life began in an ordinary Indian town, but his journey was anything but ordinary. He was born into a humble family and witnessed all the ups and downs that make small-town India so precious. Through these experiences, his heart and mind were nurtured to lay the foundations of his empathy and resilience, which later flowered in his poetry and Shayari. As a young boy, Aabid was fascinated with his grandmother’s stories- the stories of lost love, hope, and the unspoken braveness of ordinary men.

main kya likkhun
tumhaare waste
ai nim-jaan-o-soKHta-tan
wadi-e-qatl-e-aman ke basiyo
main kya likkhun
koi nauha tumhaare ru-ba-ru
sharminda-e-tasir na hoga
koi harf-e-hikayat
sabr ki taswir na hoga

Aabid Jafri

Although the stories were basic, they impressed him so much that he used them when narrating his own words. Aabid used to write poems on scraps of paper since he was little and used to write based on the laughter and tears he saw around. At twelve, he wrote his first poem about the uncertainty of being a street vendor—a voyage of struggle to meet the ends, which sustained him throughout his career. The world might not have been aware of the young dreamer then, but Aabid was already beating to the world’s poetry, preparing himself for a never-heard-of journey that would change the lives of so many.

yahi to jagti aankhon se tum ne KHwab dekhe the
ki is banjar zamin par apne KHun ki fasl Tankoge
har ek manzar mein amn-o-ashti ke rang phaila kar
har ek chehre ko nur-e-itminan-e-qalb banToge
isi banjar zamin pe KHak-o-KHun mein aaj ghaltan ho
to phir kyon sar-burida shaKH ki manind be-jaan ho
ye hona tha to kyon phir is ke ho jaane pe hairan ho

The Birth of a Poet: Finding Voice in Ghazals and Nazms

A deep sense of purpose marked Aabid Jafri’s entry into Urdu literature. He got comfort and strength through the rich inheritance of ghazals and nazms to convey his inner tensions through them. His initial work was published in local magazines, but his emotional nazm on a weaver’s love story came to the literary world’s notice. The poem was based on a true story that he had seen in his neighborhood, and it addressed the issue of longing, sacrifice, and silent suffering of pain, all of which was a common theme in his poetry.

mere logo
tumhaari band aankhen
jagti aankhon ke KHwabon ki
tumhein tabir deti hain
isi banjar zamin mein
qabr ki jagir deti hain

Aabid Jafri

Readers identified with Aabid’s words since they were also true and based on his experience. He used to say all his Shayari is based upon someone who has something to say but cannot. His ghazals used simple language to achieve the highest emotional depth. Chandni Ki Chadar is one of his most popular songs.

ye kis ne chehron pe tan di hai
na-ashnai ki phir se chadar
ki us ki ujli zamin pe main ne
brush se aankhon ke
ek paikar bana diya tha

Aabid Jafri

He wrote it after one night of suffering when he had to console a friend who was in bereavement. Aabid brought art to ordinary people’s lives; Aabid spoke to the voiceless majority through his poetry and transformed day-to-day struggles into everlasting poetry. There is something about his knack for perceiving beauty in agony, hope in hopelessness, which made him an icon to people who need comfort in words.

main ajnabi raha sab se magar sabhi mein raha
ye hausla bhi yahan par kisi kisi mein raha
qaba-e-azmat-e-insan mili faqiron ko
faqih-e-shahr to kya kya na sarwari mein raha
khincha hai zaKHm-e-adawat se dosti ka lahu
jise aziz rakha jaan se dushmani mein raha

Unheard Stories The man behind the Shayari

Behind Aabid Jafri’s celebrated verses lay a tapestry of unheard and untold stories—moments of vulnerability, kindness, and quiet heroism. Not many are aware that once in college, Aabid even spent a whole night of winter trying to help a family who were homeless. This act of kindness became the basis of his most touching nazms; Sard Raat Ka Safar talks about warmth during the coldest hour of life. This was one of the many instances in Aabid’s life, such incidents that usually do not find their way into newspapers and magazines, though they transform lives.

charagh rakh diye suraj ke samne la kar
magar wo farq na jaana jo raushni mein raha
zaban khulti to hota qadam qadam maqtal
sukut KHauf ki surat gali gali mein raha

Aabid Jafri

He had a habit of listening to strangers and was fond of spending hours with people he had never met, thinking everyone had a story to be listened to. His friends reminisce of how he would vanish away, only to come back after days with a new poem, having been inspired by a person he had met during his vagabonding. These events enhanced his writing, making it contain validity and substance. Aabid did not only write poetry; it was his way of reaching the world one untold story at a time.

main apne jism mein kuchh is tarah se bikhra hun
ki ye bhi kah nahin sakta main kaun hun kya hun
unhen KHushi hai isi baat se ki zinda hun
main un ki daen hatheli ki ek rekha hun
main pi gaya hun kai aansuon ke sail-e-rawan
main apne dil ko samundar banae baiTha hun

Pain to Poetry: Making Challenges into Power

Aabid Jafri’s life was not without hardship. He was rejected, in need of money, and lost others. However, he never gave up, and these experiences did not defeat him. Instead, he turned his suffering into poetry, where his artwork was his way of healing and redemption. Aabid was able to write a name on the death of a father at the time of his death, which inspired many to give relief due to the death of their loved one. In the poem, Bikharte Saaye, the writer found the pain of losing something and the strength of memory.

KHun mera jis se hua hai KHanjar-e-ahbab hai
ye haqiqat hai magar lagta hai jaise KHwab hai
is liye mujh sa numayan ho gaya be-baal-o-par
jis jagah main hun wahan har aadmi surKHab hai

Aabid Jafri

With the help of these writings, Aabid showed his readers the idea that even pain may serve as power and that even the blackest nights may lead to the dawn. His strength gave hope to most aspiring poets who could not give up when faced with difficulties. Aabid usually remarked, wait! Poetry is not all about words; it is more about the storm’s weather and how the beam of light shines once you go through the storm. His transition from suffering to word proves how influential art can be and how strong the human spirit is.

hum ne dekha hai ki aksar Dub jata hai wahi
jo talash-e-gauhar-e-yakta mein zer-e-ab hai
ab kisi jangal mein ja rahiye ki apne shahr mein
aadmi hi aadmi ke waste nayab hai
zindagi apni bil-aKHir ho gai us par tamam
jo kitab-e-zindagi ka na-mukammal bab hai

hai yun ki jaise junun mein KHud hi pe war karna
ajab nahin wo bhi mere raste pe KHud ko Dale
